Inside Me
2022 Undergraduate Thesis Exhibition
This exhibition was the culmination of 2 semesters of artistic experimentation and work.
The final project features a 7-foot-tall, underwear-clad self-portrait that loomed forward from a sea of crinkled reflective mylar, casting an unsettling funhouse mirror effect and including a sketchbook diary for audience members to pick up and read through my most personal thoughts and sketches. I used this project as an outlet for my own emotions as well as a way to communicate what deep mental anguish feels like.
“Inside Me” explores the facets of identity as influenced by perceptions of self-image and the unconscious mind. Using acrylic paint on different semi-transparent materials, fabric, and embroidery, I aimed to create multi-dimensional pieces that reflect the multi-dimensional layers of identity and self-esteem. These pieces also seek to work through pressures of sexualization, voyeurism, and fetishization of female bodies, as seen through the lens of my own gaze. Ultimately, my works offers others insight into the facets of my mind in a way that confronts and engages their own perceptions.
